Contribution to "Schools around the World" by Professor Akira Ninomiya

This is a little belated announcement but it could be never too late to bring good news, especially informing about the publication of an interesting book!

 

The 3rd edition of “Schools around the world”* (edited by Prof. Akira Ninomiya) published in March 2023. Since the 1st edition in 2006 (the 2nd edition followed in 2013), the book has been used as a standard handbook in education science as well as pedagogical fields in Japan. The book aims to provide an overview of the school system, school life, education policy etc. in ‘schools around the world’. The 3rd edition, added a couple of countries, boasts the largest number of countries, namely, 31 countries are covered; Germany, France, Austria, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Mexico, Brazil, The United Kingdom, The United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, South Africa, Kenya, Malawi, Samoa, China, Vietnam, Russia, The United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Thai, South Korea.

 

Austria is one of newly added countries and the third chapter “School in Austria” is my work.

 

Engagement with this research project did not only expand my knowledge in current education affairs in Austria, but also brought me valuable encounters with various education experts. Interactions with those experts were highly stimulating and I could learn a lot from their professionalism. I very much appreciate all the encounters I could have through my research. Among them, I am grateful for great supports by Prof.in Katharina Lanzmaier-Ugri (University College of Teacher Education Styria, Austria), University College Professor, Dr. Georg Krammer (University College of Teacher Education Styria, Austria), Viktor Kaplan elementary school (Styria, Austria), Triester elementary school (Styria, Austria) and Zams elementary school (Tirol, Austria). Without their help, my ‘School in Austria’ would have never been born!

 

Last but not least, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Ninomiya who trusted me and give a chance to contribute his precious book (2023.9.17).

"Tundra" Translation under the "Gatti Neri_Black Cats" initiative by Mr. Giovanni Marinelli (Firenze, Italy)

I am pleased to introduce a very interesting and insightful project I had engaged in over this summer 2023. The project is a part of the initiative "Gatti Neri_Black Cats" led by Mr. Giovanni Marinelli (Firenze, Italy) who had contacted me in the beginning of July. I worked as a translator for his text "Tundra" calling on people to see WAR from a different perspective. 

 

The 1.5 month of working on the text was an absolute pleasure to me. As I fully agreed with what the text was pointing, the fact that I could give a hand to convey his idea, in other words, to do something better for the world, excited me so much. It was surely not an easy project to accomplish, yet, absolutely worthy of doing, doing my best. 

 

Under the initiative by Mr. Marinelli, the "Tundra" text can be read in several languages such as Arabic, English, French, Greek, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. Among them, Mr. Marinelli kindly allowed me to present my work (Japanese version), English and German versions of the text on my website. If any of you are interested in the text in the three languages, please take a look and feel free to share it with anyone surrounding you. Thank you (2023.8.27).

Contribution to "Comparative Research on School Textbooks" by Professor Akira Ninomiya (Professor emeritus, Hiroshima University, Japan) 

 

Professor Akira Ninomiya, the academic supervisor for my MA study in Japan (Comparative and International Education), invited me to his latest comparative research report "Comparative Research on School Textbooks " (* the report is available only in Japanese) as one of contributors. His research, focusing on school textbooks and the related systems, covers 60 countries+1 region this time and I reported the school textbook system in Austria. For my research in Austria, I received a great help of Prof.in Katharina Lanzmaier-Ugri (University College of Teacher Education Styria, Austria) (Dec.02.2022).

Voice of Partner 2022: Creative Culture (London, the United Kingdom)

Creative Culture refers my name on their LinkedIn page once again. Since the start of our collaboration in 2018, Creative Culture has invited me to so many unforgettably interesting projects. What excites me the most at working with Creative Culture is that I feel “metamorphosis” on myself through working on the CC projects. Besides developing my skills and experiences as a professional linguist, collaboration with Creative Culture gives me a chance to think of a wide range of themes that I would never really think of otherwise, for instance DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion). Since my engagement with a couple of projects related to DEI, I become more aware of the affairs in my immediate world and get to see things from a broader perspective. That is really a great feeling to perceive the world differently. I really appreciate Creative Culture who not only opens the door to  an exciting new world but also encourages and supports me to explore the world (Nov.20.2022).

“Gender Stereotypes and Expected Backlash for Female STEM Students in Germany and Japan” is published in Frontiers in Education (January 17. 2022)

 

On January 17. 2022, the joint research in Germany and Japan which I partly joined as linguist was published in Frontiers in Education.

 

The comparative research conducted by Dr. Laura Froehlich (Fern Universität in Hagen), focusing on gender-stereotypes in the STEM fields and expected backlashes for female STEM students, consists of three parts, Study 1-3.

 

With my linguistic as well as cultural knowledge and insights, I involved in an online survey part of the Study 3, concretely, 1) translated the English items on the questionnaire into Japanese and, 2) categorized the open-ended responses provided by Japanese participants into 4 categories; positive, negative, surprised, interested/neutral in accordance with given criteria (details of the criteria are found on page 9 in the article).

 

It was a great honor and delight for me to be invited to the project and work on it which deepened my insights into the education issues as well as my own language, Japanese.
